I honestly didn’t know much about High Point University other than it was a small, private school on the East Coast. I was eager to learn about their signature programs and when I stepped foot on their campus, wow I felt like I was at a Southern Disneyland. The campus was so pristine and there were so much elaborate greenery and grand fountains. You’d be hard pressed to say if you weren’t awestruck.
Yet, moving past the university’s external beauty, I was also impressed by the inner work that the campus invests in their students. All freshmen start with a Life Skills seminar course with President Dr. Nido Qubein (Businessman, Author, & HPU President), where he lectures on “soft skills” and other communication principles. It’s almost unheard for colleges to host classes on these crucial skills, yet this university prides itself as a college that focuses on them. This forward philosophy can also be seen on campus as they implement several out-of-the-box ideas. They have a steakhouse on campus where students practice holding conversations with one another (they must leave their cell phones) and there’s also dedicated space for students to practice pitching business ideas in what looks like a very VERY intimidating board room. Additionally, there’s a pretty legit arcade room that would rival that of a casino arcade - I think they made this in part to host at risk youth when they do charity events and also entertain younger siblings of prospective students. I think it's mighty clever!

The city of High Point is also the “Furniture Capital of the World” and hosts the International Home Furnishing Market. This semi-annual event attracts 100,000 exhibitors and buyers from around the world. As such there are ample real-world opportunities for students to put their classroom training from to the test. I can especially see those majoring in interior design, business, or strategic communication to really benefit.
